Our Climate is Changing

Climate change affects all of us. Acting on it is fundamental for a thriving, resilient state.  As summer approaches in Melbourne, there are ways we can prepare for the heat and the wild storms.

Melbourne is experiencing more hot weather and heatwave events than ever before all because of climate change. We currently average 11 days above 35 degrees. Climate modelling shows this will rise to 16 days by 2050. This means more intense heat for longer periods.

While Victoria's future climate will depend on the global greenhouse gas emissions scenarios, Victoria will:

  • experience a warmer future climate with further increases to average temperatures and more frequent and intense hot days.
  • likely continue to become drier, especially in winter and throughout the cool season (April – October), while the intensity of short duration extreme rainfall events is projected to increase.
